The economics of gardening.

I Pickled some cucumbers from garden which majically turn cucumbers into pickles.
jars 50 cents, time pickling 2 hours for 6 jars. Not sure what the brine costed. $3.00/ jar at store seems like quite a bargin now.

I got a theory on what you are getting when you garden. you go out and watch the garden and see things grow. when you finnaly harvest you are looking at something that at best cost 2 times as much as you would pay at the grocery store. so what are you buying when you garden?

Anticitation.

The only cost effective crop I've found has been chili peppers. $3 for three plants, if you let the jalepenos ripen to red they're both delicious and cheaper than the $2.69/lb for red jalepenos at the store.

Also, since in California they tend to pick the tomatoes green and let them ripen on the way to the store, tomatoes here aren't very good. If you grow your own and let them vine ripen, it's worth the extra price for the much better flavor.
