Staying Morally Straight, Boy Scout Memorial, Washington D.C.

A very confusing memorial. Check your six, scout! Glad they had the presense of mind not to include a bronze van and a lolipop.

Hey, I saw that memorial when I was in DC and was totally shocked with their POOR judgment in choosing such a 'flamboyant' design for an organization of that honors young men for upholding their honor and valor. Really? "Staying Morally STRAIGHT" ? Someone was not watching where thousands of dollars were being spent on this project... This is not a garden statue--it's a huge 19' memorial. I can't imagine the shock of taking a boy scout troop to view this disappointing site if one were not previously aware that it is 'artistic' rather than truly inspirational of high morals.

yep, pretty messt up. Put something up, look at it, wait 50 years and look again. Some times where you stand determines what you see. below is from the internet.

The memorial to the Boy Scouts of America stands on the site of the first Boy Scout Jamboree in 1937. It is one of the few memorials in Washington, D.C. commemorating a living cause. The funds to build this memorial were raised by Scout units throughout the United States, and each donor signed one of several scrolls that were placed in the pedestal of the statue. The memorials was unveiled in a ceremony on November 7, 1964. The statue was accepted for the country by Associate Supreme Court Justice Tom Clark, who noted that the day marked his fiftieth anniversary as an Eagle Scout.

The bronze statue consists of three figures. The Boy Scout represents the aspirations of all past, present, and future Scouts throughout the world. The male figure exemplifies physical, mental, and moral fitness, love of country, good citizenship, loyalty, honor, and courage. He carries a helmet, a symbol of masculine attire. The female figure symbolizes enlightenment with the love of God and fellow man, justice, freedom, and democracy. She holds the eternal flame of God's Holy Spirit.

If a sculpture needs that much explanation to make it clear, the artist clearly didn't do a very good job. I thought the whole thing was supposed to imply that the first boy scout was simply the illegitimate offspring of another one of Zeus' philandering encounters.
